THE PROCESS
Let's take a look at what you can expect, timeline-wise:
AT BOOKING - I will send an official email, detailing information like location, time, date, etc. An invoice for the non-refundable deposit will also be sent, and must be paid to secure your booking. Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have - I'm happy to consult on outfits, etc.
SHOOT WEEK - I will check in with you prior to your shoot day to ensure we're all on the same page with location, date, and time.
SHOOT DAY - Arrive early to your session - plan ahead for traffic, and try to prep children and others as best you can so we can have a good outcome. During your session, you can expect to have fun, and be put in a variety of poses, from comfortable and casual to a few that are more formal and posed. My goal is to give you a variety of images, all of incredible quality.
FOLLOWING SHOOT DAY - After your photo session, I go through all the images and select the absolute best, which I fully, professionally edit and deliver to you via online, downloadable, shareable gallery with full print release. Turnaround time is usually within a few days.

MY BEST ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL SHOOT!
Your shoot is fast approaching, and I wanted to give you the #1 piece of advice I can for the day of, to ensure we have a successful outcome:
FIND JOY IN THE CHAOS!
That's right - there's a chance your session won't be all rainbows and smiles, especially if you have little ones, or moody teenagers or a reluctant husband, so the most important thing I can ask of you is that you (Mom and Dad) come with great attitudes, ready to have fun and play and embrace the wild, but (mostly) happy chaos that is family!
If you have a shy one who is feeling like curling up in your arms, let it happen - don't force it. If you have wild and crazy kids that are bouncing off the walls, let them go a little crazy. Don't expect absolute perfection at all times from the tiny humans that you love so darn much. Easier said than done. I know, I know! But try, and I promise to help you all relax. When kid chaos takes hold, throw those arms up or around your family and laugh through it all. The images will be authentic and genuine and you will all look back on them and see FUN and LOVE and LAUGHTER...even if it's not perfectly posed.
Will we get that traditional, every looking and smiling image... yep! More importantly, you will also come away with so many moments filled with emotion.
I know getting photos taken can be a lot of work. First, you have to find the photographer, then find a time that works for everyone. Decide on a location. Choose clothing. Get everyone looking their best. You may do all that and show up, ready to go, but things don’t go as planned. Your teenager is grumpy. The wind is teasing your perfectly styled hair. Your toddler decided their nap wasn’t long enough.
Nothing makes a family photo shoot go south faster than being stressed out.
It is my job to try and help the situation, whether it be with uncooperative weather or uncooperative people (especially little people). If you’ll show up with a good attitude, determined to make our photo session together an enjoyable experience for everyone, I promise we’ll make it work. Having a go-with-the-flow outlook will help you feel better, calm the kids, and give me the chance to give you the best possible end product. I’m so excited to work with you!

LOOKING YOUR BEST
Choosing to get family photos or portraits or scheduling an engagement shoot is always a good choice, however, once you’ve got the photographer booked, deciding what to wear can bring you to a standstill. The importance of taking the time to pick, accessorize, and style your and others’ outfits cannot be overstated. What you wear goes a long way toward creating photos that you love. With that in mind, I’ve put together a few simple guidelines for you:
CLOTHING
MAKEUP, HAIR, ETC.
CLOTHING
- First of all, make sure you’re comfortable in what you wear. If you feel unnatural, it will show and photos may come out with you looking stiff.
- Your clothing should be appropriate for the season and location you are having photos taken. If we’ll be walking or hiking in to a location, make sure you bring appropriate footwear, even if you’re going to change into cute sandals once we get there. If it’s summer, think light, cool. In fall or winter, you’ll want more layers and warm materials. If you’re taking photos in a green garden, wearing green might make you look like a floating head. Photos taken on a sandy beach might be complemented by bright colors.
- Bright, bold colors like red, electric green, fluorescent orange, etc. can throw a color cast onto nearby faces, necks, and hair. I recommend staying away from these.
- A good rule of thumb is to pick 2 to 4 main colors and have people wear patterns and shades of those colors. (Note: one pattern that never translates well in photos is very small stripes or checks. It creates an effect called “moiré” that can be impossible to fix even in post-processing.)
- Layering and incorporating different textures also add a lot of visual interest to photos. Don’t forget the scarves, jewelry, watches, belts, hair accessories, and fun statement pieces. On the other hand, putting everyone in the same outfit, say, blue jeans and white top, while very 90s, can be boring.
- If all fails, neutrals are usually a safe bet – think beige, ivory, taupe, black, gray, navy, and shades of white.
- If you’re still stuck, I highly recommend Pinterest!
MAKEUP, HAIR, ETC.
- If you're wanting a little extra help, I highly encourage a hair and makeup artist. A professional hair and makeup artist will not only make you look your best, but will help you feel like the best version of yourself, and that confidence will shine through in the photos we take. Makeup applied for photos is different than everyday makeup – the camera translates it differently than the eye. A good makeup/hair person will help you highlight your best features according to your vision, whether you want a minimal, natural look or full coverage with smokey eyes.
- It’s fairly common in the weeks leading up to a photo session for clients to have an identity crisis. “Should I get bangs?!” “I wonder if this face mask that’s trending will help my skin look more luminous?” “My brows are looking a little overgrown. I better tweeze them back.” “I wonder if the new men’s haircuts will make me look more ‘with it’?” Please, don’t go crazy making yourself over just before having pictures taken. A good trim a few days before our session together for you ladies or men will have you looking fresh, instead of stressed when your haircut doesn’t go as planned. And stay clear of new products in the days leading up to our shoot – no one wants irritated, blotchy, or broken out skin in their photos.
MY JOB, YOUR JOB
When you show up to a photoshoot, it is my job to pose you in a flattering way, help arrange groupings, be your hype girl, choose the best spot for lighting and background. It is your job, as the client, to be on time, help prepare your family members to listen and be ready to go, and make sure everyone is looking their best (hair arranged, correct outfits, clean faces, etc.)
As a reminder, here are my policies when it comes to editing. Included in my regular editing workflow is the following: Head swaps, open closed eyes, basic color/lighting adjustments, cropping/leveling, minor temporary blemishes and bruises, background distractions (people, cars)
What I charge extra for: Substantial edits such as changing clothing color, severe acne, teeth whitening, wrinkled clothing, logos on clothing, body edits. Basically, if it’s something on your end you could have prevented but didn’t, editing will be charged at an extra fee. *I do not offer extreme body edits because they create an unauthentic image that I do not encourage. Embracing who you are is what makes for a good portrait.*

EXTENDED FAMILIES
A few special notes for extended families:
1) Just a reminder that extended family sessions are subject to certain time constraints we don't usually have in a regular, single family session. Extended family sessions include large group photos (typically the entire group, grandparents with grandchildren, grandparents with all their children and spouses, etc.) and portraits of each individual family, as well as couples shots, individual kids, etc. However, because of the larger group size, these sessions typically include mostly posed photos, with much less candid and interactive pictures.
2) If you have time, I'd love to be provided with a “priority” shot list (in order, usually no more than 15 photos) and an “if we have time” shot list. The “if we have time” list is shots you want if everything runs smoothly and time permits. (Sample shot list: Group, grandparents and grandkids, siblings, grandkids, individual of family A, individual of family B, grandma with all girls, etc.)
3) Please let me know if there are any special bonds between family members. For example, grandma and oldest granddaughter, grandpa and only grandson, etc. Knowing this ahead of time can help me capture those in-between moments or, if time permits, put together a special shot for them.
