Family Photos in the Alpine Poppies | Everything You Need To Know

1/15/2026

If you’ve ever been to Alpine, Utah, you’ve probably gasped when this typically all-green field suddenly explodes with bright red poppies and sweeping mountain views. This short window of wildflower season is one of the most beautiful backdrops in all of Utah County — and it makes an unforgettable setting for family photos in the Alpine poppies. This session with the Pierce family is one of my favorites I’ve ever photographed. Between the glowing light, the Wasatch Mountains, and a whole field of poppies among the roped-off pathways (new in 2025), it perfectly captures why this location is so special. If you’re thinking about booking family pictures here, this guide will tell you everything you need to know.

The Alpine poppy fields are located along the foothills on the east side of Alpine, Utah, and when they bloom, they look straight out of a fairytale. You get:
  • Rolling hills covered in vibrant red poppies
  • Soft sagebrush and tall grasses for texture and depth
  • Massive mountain backdrops in every direction
  • Plenty of space for kids to move, laugh, and explore
Unlike manicured gardens, this location feels wild, natural, and authentic — which is exactly what creates those relaxed, joyful family photos that never feel stiff or overly posed.
When Do the Alpine Poppies Bloom? This is the most important part to know, because the poppies are very short-lived.
Typical bloom window:
🗓 Mid-May through early June
The timing changes every year depending on snowpack and spring temperatures, but most years the poppies peak for about 2 weeks. Once they’re gone, they’re gone until the next year.
That’s why I keep a very close eye on this location every spring and only open a small number of Alpine poppy sessions when the bloom is perfect.

Best Time of Day for Poppy Field Family PhotosThe lighting here makes all the difference. Golden hour (the hour before sunset) is absolutely ideal. That’s when you get warm, glowy tones, soft shadows, and glowing flowers. This is exactly when this session was photographed — and you can see how the light turns everything golden and dreamy.
What to Wear for Family Photos in the Alpine PoppiesBecause the poppies are bold and colorful, what you wear matters. I recommend:
  • Neutrals: cream, beige, tan, soft gray, muted blues
  • Light denim works beautifully
  • Soft textures like linen, cotton, or knits
Avoid bright reds, neon colors, and large logos or graphics. The goal is for you to stand out while the poppies and mountains create a beautiful, natural frame around your family.

Crowds & How We Avoid Them
The Alpine poppies are becoming more popular every year — but I schedule my sessions very intentionally.
I photograph here:
  • On weekday evenings whenever possible
  • During the last light of day
Parking & Getting ThereI provide every client with exact directions before their session, but in general:
  • Parking is along the foothill roads near the Alpine Bench. You park and then walk down a somewhat steep dirt hill, so plan footwear accordingly.
  • It’s a short, easy walk into the poppy fields, but parking fills up fast, so come early
Book Your Alpine Poppy Family PhotosIf you’ve been dreaming of family photos in the Alpine poppies, now is the time to plan. These sessions are only offered for a very limited window each spring, and they always fill quickly.
I would love to photograph your family here and create something beautiful and meaningful for you to keep forever.
