Family Photos at Albion Basin

One of my most requested summer locations is Albion Basin, up Big Cottonwood Canyon. Peak blossom time begins in early-late July, although it can vary based on winter conditions (snowpack, spring rain, high summer temps, etc.). The meadow is filled with so many wildflowers in all the different colors, backed by epic Utah mountains. 

Albion Basin is located at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon, just past Alta ski resort. It is accessible via a dirt road that is only open during the summer months. The dates the road is open vary each year and are based on snow levels and road conditions. Because it's such a popular spot, choosing less popular dates (weekdays instead of weekends) and times (mornings, when possible) can help relieve issues like finding parking and dealing with busy crowds. I always try to time sessions to coincide with peak bloom time, but even if we miss peak, we can create beautiful images with just a few flowers or just the beautiful mountains and greenery. 

I offer both full sessions or split-sessions (where two families can split a full session - 30 minutes each, all best images). Sessions typically begin at about 7 p.m. or at early morning, at 6:30 a.m.

Getting There

• Drive up Little Cottonwood Canyon toward Alta
• Continue to the end of the paved road
• Pay the entry fee at the ranger booth (typically $10 per vehicle)
• Continue about 2 miles on the bumpy dirt road to the basin - high clearance recommended

Parking (Important!)

There are three small parking areas:

• Catherine’s Pass Trailhead (best option - park here!)

​Parking availability isn’t guaranteed until you arrive, and parking outside designated areas can result in tickets or towing.

Pro tip: If possible, have a friend or family member drive you so someone can stay with the car if parking is tight.
Travel Timing

Albion Basin follows a “one car in, one car out” system, which can cause lines at the ranger booth—especially on weekends.

Please plan to add at least 30 extra minutes, though I recommend an hour. Arriving early gives you time to picnic, use the restroom, change clothes, and relax before your session.

What to Know Before You Go

• Vault toilets are at Catherine's Pass Trailhead
• No changing rooms (plan to change in your car)
• Cooler temperatures, even in summer
• Bugs are usually minimal, but bug spray is a good idea
• I try to carpool with clients whenever possible! The more that people can carpool to the top, the more parking will be accessible for everyone who wants to enjoy the area. If possible, I recommend meeting me and driving up with me or having me meet you and hop in your car if you have space.
• The trails get very dusty. Be prepared to deal with dusty shoes or a few dusty hand/footprints on your clothes from your little ones.
• This is a beautiful location that we want to have access to for years to come, so it is vital that we respect the trails and do not pick the flowers. Most of the area is roped off with little step-out spots that we will use. Sometimes we will have to wait our turn to use these spots. Trust me, I can shoot from the angles that will make it look like we are standing in the flowers!
• Lastly, be prepared to be patient - Getting up the canyon, through the booth, parking, and dealing with the crowds can try your patience, but the photos will be worth it! ​
