Cherry Blossoms at the Utah State Capitol: Everything You Need to Know

1/15/2026

Every spring, something truly magical happens in downtown Salt Lake City. For a few short weeks, the cherry blossom trees surrounding the Utah State Capitol burst into soft clouds of pale pink and white, creating one of the most romantic and photogenic backdrops in all of Utah. These trees are famous for a reason — and once you see them in bloom, you’ll understand why couples, families, and photographers count down to cherry blossom season every year. If you’ve been dreaming of light, airy, romantic spring photos, the Utah State Capitol cherry blossoms are hard to beat. Here's everything you need to know for photos at the cherry blossoms at the Utah State Capitol:

When Are the Cherry Blossoms in Bloom?

Cherry blossom timing varies slightly every year based on the weather, but in Utah they typically bloom:
🌸 Late March through mid-April

Peak bloom usually lasts 7–10 days, which makes timing everything. Warm winters can make them bloom early, and cold snaps can delay them — so I always monitor the trees closely as spring approaches and let my clients know when we’re entering peak bloom.

If you want these trees in your photos, you need to be flexible — they wait for no one!

Why the Utah State Capitol is So Special

The Capitol grounds are lined with rows of mature cherry trees that create:
  • Soft, floating petals falling through the air
  • Tunnel-like walkways of blossoms
  • A romantic, European-style atmosphere
  • Beautiful light filtering through the branches

Paired with the Capitol’s white stone architecture and manicured grounds, it’s one of the most elegant and timeless spring locations in Utah.

These trees photograph beautifully whether you’re planning:
  • Engagement photos
  • Bridals
  • Anniversary sessions
  • Family photos
  • Or just a spring couples session

Best Time of Day for Cherry Blossom Photos

Because this is such a popular public location, timing matters a lot.
The best times for photos here are:
🌿 Early Morning (7-8 am)
This is by far the best option if you want the most peaceful, clean backgrounds and soft light with NO crowds!

🌿 Golden Hour (1–2 hours before sunset)
This gives the prettiest glow, but also comes with heavier foot traffic. Midday light is harsh, and the Capitol is extremely busy then, so I avoid it whenever possible.

How to Avoid Crowds

The cherry blossoms at the Capitol are one of Salt Lake’s most popular spring attractions, which means you're dealing with tourists, proposals, TikTokers, high school dance groups, and more - All show up during peak bloom.

Here’s how I help my clients avoid the chaos:
  • I schedule sessions on weekdays when possible
  • I book early morning slots
  • I know where to position you for cleaner backgrounds
  • I shoot strategically so you don’t feel like you’re in a zoo
You might still see people around, but I make sure your photos look intimate, romantic, and beautifully secluded.

What to Wear for Cherry Blossom Photos
Soft, romantic colors look incredible against the pale pink trees. I always recommend:
  • Light blues
  • Creams
  • Soft blush
  • Sage
  • Neutrals
Avoid:
  • Bright neon colors
  • Busy patterns
  • Heavy black
Flowy dresses, soft textures, and classic outfits photograph beautifully here and help keep the look timeless.

Things to Know Before Your Session

A few important things to keep in mind:
🌸 Bloom timing is short – we have about 1–2 weeks to catch them at their best
🌸 Weather matters – rain, freezing temps, or wind can shorten the bloom
🌸 Petals fall quickly – peak bloom is breathtaking, but brief
🌸 Crowds increase fast – the earlier we shoot, the better
This is one of those locations that is absolutely worth the planning.

Why Book Your Cherry Blossom Photos With Me

Because this window is so short, experience matters.
I track:
  • Bloom timing
  • Light direction
  • Crowd patterns
  • Best angles
  • Where the trees are fullest
I don’t just show up and hope for the best — I plan every cherry blossom session carefully so you get images that feel romantic, calm, and elevated.

These sessions book quickly every spring, and once the blossoms are gone, we have to wait an entire year for them to return.
