Albion Basin Photo Sessions | Everything You Need to Know

If you’ve ever dreamed of family photos surrounded by endless wildflowers, sweeping mountain views, and cool summer air, Albion Basin should be at the very top of your list. Tucked high in the Wasatch Mountains near Alta, this iconic Utah location is one of the most breathtaking places for summer family photos — and one of my personal favorites. As a Utah family and wedding photographer who photographs Albion Basin multiple times every year, I’m sharing everything you need to know before planning your session — from when to go, how to get there, and why this location books up so quickly.
Family photo session at Albion Basin in Utah surrounded by summer wildflowers and Wasatch Mountain views
Albion Basin is famous for its vivid summer wildflowers, alpine meadows, and dramatic mountain backdrops. During peak bloom, the hillsides are covered in lupine, Indian paintbrush, fireweed, sunflowers, American bistort, and more — making it one of the most photographed places in Utah. It’s no surprise that families from Salt Lake County, Utah County, and beyond travel here for their photos every summer.

Where Is Albion Basin? Albion Basin is located at the very top of Little Cottonwood Canyon near Alta, Utah. While it feels like you’ve traveled to Switzerland once you arrive, it’s actually only about a 35–45 minute drive from Salt Lake City, depending on traffic.

How to Get to Albion Basin
  • Drive up Little Cottonwood Canyon toward Alta
  • Continue all the way to the end of the paved road
  • You’ll arrive at a ranger booth, where you’ll pay an entry fee (typically $10 per vehicle)
  • From there, drive about 2 miles up a dirt road to the basin

***Important Travel Tip***
Albion Basin uses a “one car in, one car out” policy to limit congestion and protect the area. This often causes a line at the ranger booth, especially on weekends.
👉 Plan to add at least 30 extra minutes to your travel time. I actually recommend an hour - you can arrive early, picnic, use the bathroom, change clothes to avoid wrinkles, and make it an experience!

Parking at Albion Basin
  • There are three small parking areas:
    • Catherine’s Pass Trailhead
    • Two lots at Cecret Lake Trailhead
  • You won’t know if parking is available until you reach the top
  • Parking outside designated areas will result in tickets or towing
💡 Pro tip: I highly recommend having a friend or family member drive you to your photo session so someone can stay with the car if needed.

Best Time of Year for Photos at Albion Basin
  • Road typically opens: Early July
  • Road closes: October
  • Dates vary depending on snowfall — always check Alta’s website before planning
Peak Wildflower Season
  • Best blooms: Late July through early August. Only a week or two, which can be shorter if we have storms.
  • Snow often lingers into mid-July due to the high elevation

Best Time of Day for Family Photos
  • Sunrise and sunset are the most beautiful times for photos
  • The soft light enhances the wildflowers and mountain views
  • Sunset sessions are especially stunning at the mountain overlook parking area

Iconic Photo Spots at Albion Basin
Mountain Overlook (First Parking Lot)This unassuming pull-off on the right side of the road offers one of the most iconic Albion Basin views — rolling wildflowers with dramatic peaks behind you.

⚠️ Rangers are very strict:
  • Stay on marked trails
  • No playing or walking through wildflowers or picking flowers
  • Help preserve this incredible landscape so it stays open to everyone

Do You Need a Photography Permit at Albion Basin?

Great news — photography permits are no longer required at Albion Basin.
As of June 2021:
  • Professional photographers no longer need to apply or pay for a permit
  • Previously required business license and insurance documentation are no longer necessary
Even so, it’s incredibly important to:
  • Follow trail rules
  • Respect other visitors
  • Protect the wildflowers and landscape

Restrooms, Bugs, & What to Know Before You Go
  • Only one public outhouse near the second parking lot
  • No changing rooms — plan to change in your car
  • Expect cooler temperatures, even in summer
  • Bugs are minimal but bringing bug spray is always a good idea

Albion Basin is one of my most requested locations for family photos — and sessions here book up fast every year.
If you’re dreaming of:
  • Wildflower-filled family photos
  • A true Utah mountain backdrop

✨ I’d love to photograph your family here.
📅 Booking Tip: Albion Basin sessions often fill by early spring. I recommend reaching out as early as February to secure a spot during peak wildflower season.

Want Wildflower Photos Without the Crowds?

Albion Basin is stunning — but it can be busy and stressful with parking restrictions.
The good news?
I know several less-crowded wildflower locations in Utah that offer a similar look and feel. These locations are reserved exclusively for my paying clients and are perfect if you want gorgeous wildflower photos without the stress.
