If you’ve ever dreamed of family photos surrounded by endless wildflowers, sweeping mountain views, and cool summer air, Albion Basin should be at the very top of your list. Tucked high in the Wasatch Mountains near Alta, this iconic Utah location is one of the most breathtaking places for summer family photos — and one of my personal favorites. As a Utah family and wedding photographer who photographs Albion Basin multiple times every year, I’m sharing everything you need to know before planning your session — from when to go, how to get there, and why this location books up so quickly. Albion Basin is famous for its vivid summer wildflowers, alpine meadows, and dramatic mountain backdrops. During peak bloom, the hillsides are covered in lupine, Indian paintbrush, fireweed, sunflowers, American bistort, and more — making it one of the most photographed places in Utah. It’s no surprise that families from Salt Lake County, Utah County, and beyond travel here for their photos every summer. Where Is Albion Basin? Albion Basin is located at the very top of Little Cottonwood Canyon near Alta, Utah. While it feels like you’ve traveled to Switzerland once you arrive, it’s actually only about a 35–45 minute drive from Salt Lake City, depending on traffic.
How to Get to Albion Basin
***Important Travel Tip*** Albion Basin uses a “one car in, one car out” policy to limit congestion and protect the area. This often causes a line at the ranger booth, especially on weekends. 👉 Plan to add at least 30 extra minutes to your travel time. I actually recommend an hour - you can arrive early, picnic, use the bathroom, change clothes to avoid wrinkles, and make it an experience! Parking at Albion Basin
